授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | This year’s theme is foreign encounters that shaped the medieval and early modern periods. We look at a variety of such interactions—first-hand, fictional, and some blurring the lines between them—arising from travel and exploration, war and conquest, commerce, and diplomacy. Central to our enquiry are destabilized antinomies—for instance, insider/outsider, civilized/barbaric—and their role in the evolution of cross-cultural ethics. Throughout, we shall consider what the narrator’s purposes might be and the rhetorical strategies used to achieve them.
Our readings begin with medieval travelogues that occupy the borderland between fact and folklore (The Travels of Marco Polo and John Mandeville’s The Book of Marvels and Travels), before moving to early modern records of exploration and imperialism in the New World (Christopher Columbus’s Journal and Walter Raleigh’s The Discovery of Guiana). We shall pay particular attention to point of view in accounts of conquest by pairing excerpts from Bernal Díaz del Castillo’s The True History of the Conquest of New Spain with indigenous perspectives in The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico (ed. Miguel León-Portilla). The course then examines epics of empire, Luís Vaz de Camões’s The Lusiads and Torquato Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered, alongside Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, The Wrath of God, a cinematic deconstruction of the conquistador figure. In the final stretch, we turn to the 17th and 18th centuries, concentrating on Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s observations of women’s social spheres and liberties in the Ottoman Empire (The Turkish Embassy Letters), then concluding with foundational slave narratives (Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko and Olaudah Equiano’s autobiography). |
