授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | | This course deals with prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination It aims to help students understand the elements behind racism, and to grasp the essence of theories and research methods pertaining to the topic. It also enhances the development of students’ interest in various matters relating to education, human development, and human society from the perspective of a negative social phenomenon. Students will read, present, and discuss various topics in racism, reading the most comprehensive book on the matter. This will allow students to understand how intergroup identity plays a major role in our attitudes toward multiculturalism and diversity. |

到達目標 【英語】 Objectives of the Course | | | Students will learn the various concepts, theories, methodologies and issues in prejudice and stereotype research. The course aims to train students to critically evaluate received theories of the matter, questioning them to their scope and explanatory potential as applied to the Japanese and Asian cultural contexts. This course will help students plan and conduct intergroup research, founding their research on theories while recognizing the challenges of the topic area. |

授業の内容や構成 Course Content / Plan | | 1) Introduction

Chapter topics include:
Development of prejudice
Intergroup threat theory
Automaticity in cognition of outgroups
Attribution in discrimination
Controlling Prejudice
Stereotypes and shifting standards
Stereotype and social identity threat
Entitativity and stereotyping
Accuracy of stereotypes
Intergroup interaction
Sexual prejudice |

履修条件・関連する科目 Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | | Fundamental English skills are necessary. All lectures and discussions to be conducted in English |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Presentations: 70%
(students will present a synopsis of at least one chapter to demonstrate their understanding of the materials, and carry on the discussion)
Participation: 30%
(participation in discussions, and giving constructive feedback to presenters)
The passing score is more than 60% out of 100%. |
