授業の目的 【日本語】
Goals of the Course(JPN) | | 多くの抗生物質を利用できる現代においても、細菌感染症は依然として人類にとって重大な脅威である。近年、薬剤耐性菌は世界的に増加しており、2050年には感染症による死亡者数ががんによる死亡者数を上回るとの予測も報告されている。このような背景から、新たな感染症治療戦略の開発が強く求められている。
宿主は、ウイルスや細菌感染から身を守るための高度で複雑な免疫システムを備えているが、病原微生物は宿主細胞因子を巧みに利用し、免疫応答を制御することで感染を成立させる。一方で、常在微生物はヒトの身体を構成する重要な要素の一つであり、宿主の健康維持に重要な役割を果たしていることが近年明らかになってきた。
本講義では、宿主と微生物の相互作用に関する先端的研究への理解を深めるとともに、感染症の成立機構およびその制御戦略について多方面で考察することを目的とする。 |

授業の目的 【英語】
Goals of the Course | | Despite the availability of a wide range of antibiotics, bacterial infectious diseases remain a major threat to humankind. The global rise of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria has intensified concerns, highlighting the urgent need for novel strategies to combat infectious diseases.
Hosts possess complex immune systems to defend against pathogens; however, viruses and bacteria have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to manipulate host cellular factors and evade immune responses. In contrast, commensal microorganisms are essential components of the human body and play critical roles in maintaining host health.
This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of cutting-edge research on host–microbe interactions and to promote critical thinking on infection mechanisms and strategies for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. |

Objectives of the Course | | 1. Students will be able to explain the basic mechanisms of infectious diseases and host immune responses, including recent advances in the field.
2. Students will be able to describe experimental approaches and research methodologies used to study host–microbe interactions and apply this knowledge to scientific research.
3. Students will be able to discuss the roles of microorganisms in host health and social impacts of infectious diseases. |

Lecture-3: Pathogenic bacteria and Horizontal gene transfer
Lecture-4: The battle between pathogens and immune cells
Department seminar : Pathogenic bacteria hijack the host ubiquitin system
Lecture will be conducted by Dr. Minsoo Kim (Kyoto University) in English. |
