Goals of the Course | | | This seminar is designed to help students write a thesis in the field of political science and political economy. To achieve this goal, participants will read and discuss a textbook that explicates the foundations of empirical political science research. The reading material includes topics ranging from theory building, causality, research design, measurement, to elementary quantitative analyses. |

Objectives of the Course | | By attending this seminar, students will develop skills that will allow them:
(1) to construct an effective research design,
(2) to critically evaluate previous research,
(3) to conduct thesis and other independent, original research, and
(4) to deliver their ideas in the form of academic writing and presentations. |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan | | In the first week, the instructor introduces the seminar and its objectives and structure.
Starting from the second week, participants will read and discuss one chapter of the course textbook per week. Below details the course schedule.
Week 1: Course introduction
Week 2: The scientific study of politics
Week 3: The art of theory building
Week 4: Evaluating causal relationships
Week 5: Research design
Week 6: Measuring concepts of interest
Week 7: Getting to know your data
Week 8: Probability and statistical inference
Week 9: Bivariate hypothesis testing
Week 10: Two-variable regression models
Week 11: Multiple regression: the basics
Week 12: Multiple regression model specification
Week 13: Limited dependent variables and time-series data
Week 14: Presentation of students' thesis plan (1)
Week 15: Presentation of students' thesis plan (2) |

履修条件・関連する科目
Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | - There is no precondition to take this course.
- Students who do not choose the instructor as the chair advisor are welcome to register for and join this seminar course.
- Students who are interested in more advanced topics on causal inference and quantitative analyses are advised to proceed to Lecture on Inclusive Society and State B (Quantitative Social Science). |
