授業の目的 【英語】 Goals of the Course | | | This course offers an advanced introduction to (public) international law, namely, legal rules that mainly regulate the relationship between States. In particular, it explores the way in which public international law offers a relevant framework for international cooperation. It is designed for both students who have already studied the subject at the undergraduate level and those who are new to the study of law. It consists of five parts. First, after a course introduction, it offers some initial remarks on the relevance of public international law to international cooperation. Second, it discusses how to distinguish between public international law and other materials such as policies and conducts a closer analysis of treaties that now constitute the main source of public international law. Third, it examines mechanisms through which States can resolve a dispute that arises between them without having recourse to the use of armed force, especially the International Court of Justice. Fourth, it assesses international environmental law, an area of public international law dedicated to the protection of global environment, with a focus on climate change. Finally, it evaluates international human rights law, exploring how public international law has now evolved to go beyond the traditional inter-State relationship and even address the live and dignity of each individual in the international society. |

履修条件・関連する科目 Course Prerequisites and Related Courses | | | There is no precondition to take this course. Students are able to gain a deeper understanding of public international law, if they also attend other relevant courses at the GSID. Such courses include the Law of the United Nations, International Economic Law, and Multinational Corporations and International Law. |

成績評価の方法と基準 Course Evaluation Method and Criteria | | Class engagements: 40% (possibly including short essays and/or presentations). Final essay: 60%.
Credit is given to C- or C (where applicable) or higher grade for each criterion. |
