Goals of the Course
The private sector has increasingly become a critical actor in economic and social development in developing countries and emerging economies. This interdisciplinary course integrates both business and development perspectives to explore how enterprises contribute to and are shaped by development processes. From the business perspective, students will explore how multinational corporations and enterprises operate in emerging markets, including foreign direct investment, market entry strategies, global value chains, and international human resource management. From the development perspective, the course examines how business activities influence employment creation, workforce development, poverty reduction, and inclusive growth in developing countries. Students will analyze diverse issues ranging from labor markets and the informal economy to global integration mechanisms and public-private partnerships, acquiring knowledge and skills relevant for formulating business strategies and development policies that contribute to sustainable and inclusive development in emerging economies.
