Goals of the Course | | | This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of sustainability challenges and solutions in developing country contexts through place-based experiential learning and multicultural collaborative learning. Through interdisciplinary lectures, fieldwork, and collaborative activities in in the Philippines (Laguna and the Palawan Biosphere Reserve) the course integrates global sustainability frameworks with local knowledge and practices, emphasizing the interconnections among environmental conservation, economic development, and community livelihoods. |

授業の内容や構成
Course Content / Plan | | 本授業は、フィリピンにおけるサステナビリティおよび環境マネジメントをテーマとした集中型のフィールドワーク科目である。フィリピン大学ロスバニョス校（UPLB）でのオリエンテーションおよび研究フォーラムを皮切りに、講義、フィールドワーク、協働学修を通じて、国際的および地域的なサステナビリティの実践について学ぶ。
ユネスコ生物圏保存地域に指定されているパラワンを主な研修地とし、経済発展と環境保全の両立、持続可能な観光、都市農業、文化遺産保全、持続可能な鉱業などを題材に、専門家講義や現地見学、地域関係者との交流を行う。これらの活動を通じて、主体的な学修と学際的視点の涵養を図る。渡航前には事前説明会および事例研究の勉強会（3回・各1.5時間）を実施し、帰国後には最終発表会を行う。
現地スケジュール
Day 1：フィリピン大学ロスバニョス校（UPLB）におけるオリエンテーション
Day 2–5：環境研究フォーラムおよび合同フィールド活動
Day 6–15：ユネスコ生物圏保存地域パラワンにおけるフィールドワーク、講義、地域産業関係者・行政担当者・地域住民との交流
Day 16：総括討議および成果発表 | This course is an intensive field-based program designed to integrate lectures, fieldwork, and collaborative learning on sustainability and environmental management in the Philippines. The program begins with an orientation at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), followed by an exploration of global and local sustainability practices through research forums, ecological fieldwork, and student workshops focused on nature-based solutions and applied technologies.
The course then examines the balance between economic development and environmental conservation in the Palawan Biosphere Reserve, combining expert lectures with site visits to World Heritage and community-based sustainable tourism areas. Students engage with innovations in urban agriculture through on-site learning and dialogue with local farmers, highlighting sustainable food systems and livelihoods.
The program also includes field-based archaeological education at the Tabon Cave Complex to understand cultural heritage conservation within environmental management. Finally, the course addresses sustainable mining practices, featuring site visits to mining operations and policy discussions with government agencies. Pre-departure orientation sessions and case study workshops (three sessions, 1.5 hours each) will be conducted prior to departure, followed by a final presentation session after returning.
Day 1: Orientation at University of the Philippines Los Baños
Day 2 - 5: Environmental Research Forum, joint field activities with UPLB Professors and students
Day 6- 15: Fieldworks, lectures, and interaction with local industry players, decision makes and communities in Palawan, a designated Biosphere Reserved by UNESCO.
Day 16: Wrap up Group discussions and presentations
The research forum, field-based learning visits, lectures, group discussions, and student presentations, interactions with locals are designed to promote active learning, critical thinking, and the integration of multidisciplinary perspectives. |

Emphasis is placed on active participation, contribution to teamwork, and depth of understanding of environmental sustainability. |
