Goals of the Course [ENG]
The primary goal of this course is to analyze and understand the structures of academic writing used in journal articles and graduation theses. The course introduces both how academic writing is structured, and ideas about research questions and research design that underlie such structures. The course is directed primarily toward graduate students early in their career, and aims to help them develop from academic readers to academic writers.

学術論文を分析する。執筆予定の論文のアブストラクトを作成する。専門分野の論文を分析した口頭発表を行う。受講生や教員とディスカッションを行う。

Objectives of the Course [ENG]
You will learn about the fundamental parts of journal articles, both the sections of the paper and important underlying ideas such as research questions and ways of communicating with different audiences. You will produce a preliminary abstract for a paper you plan to write, and deliver an oral presentation analyzing a published paper in your field.

The seminar involves discussion among participants as well as the instructor. Therefore, all participants must be able to communicate in written and spoken English to some degree. Participants should be prepared to discuss ideas actively.

3. Introduction: Hypotheses and thesis statements in research
4. Methods: Research design and the use of evidence

7. Materials: Writing the introduction section
8. Results: Using evidence to support the thesis statement
9. Discussion: Organizing sections and writing headings

Course Prerequisites and Related Courses
Open to graduate students in any field. You DO NOT need to contact the instructor prior to registering. Participants should be able to communicate in spoken and written English to some degree.
成績評価の方法と基準
Course Evaluation Method and Criteria
Students who enroll for credit are required to do the following: participate actively in seminar meetings; deliver one oral presentation; write a preliminary abstract. Evaluation is Pass/No pass.

Achievement of the objectives stated in the [Objectives of the Course] section will be considered the criterion for passing the course.

Study Load (Self-directed Learning Outside Course Hours)
Reading or related preparation prior to class generally includes short (2 to 10 pages in English) articles. Preparation for the final presentation and participants' own abstracts will take more time. Additional details will be provided in class if necessary.
