授業の目的 【日本語】
Goals of the Course [JPN]
Goals of the Course [ENG]
As societal challenges become increasingly complex and difficult to address adequately within a single discipline, researchers are expected to develop the ability to engage in dialogue with those from different academic backgrounds and to draw on diverse knowledge and perspectives to generate new research questions and possibilities.
This course aims to develop the foundational competencies necessary for students to understand both their own research and that of researchers from other disciplines through interdisciplinary dialogue and collaborative activities, to identify connections among their respective research subjects, perspectives, methods, and values, and to generate new research questions and ideas.
More specifically, students will develop the ability to reconsider the distinctive features and originality of their own research; communicate its content clearly and engagingly to people outside their field; ask appropriate questions to deepen their understanding of others’ research; identify similarities, differences, and potential connections between their own research and that of others; and envision new research possibilities by combining diverse forms of knowledge and ways of thinking.
In interdisciplinary dialogue, the course emphasizes a constructive approach to discussing open-ended issues rather than seeking an immediate single correct answer or conclusion. Students will learn to clarify differences in assumptions and values and to engage productively with questions for which no definitive answer has yet been established. Through these activities, the course aims not only to help students understand research in other disciplines, but also to deepen their understanding of their own expertise and rediscover its potential by drawing on questions and different perspectives offered by others.

Through activities such as research presentations, question-and-answer sessions, reflection on one’s own expertise, and the development of interdisciplinary research ideas, this course enables students to deepen their understanding of both their own research and the research of others. Students will develop the ability to connect different forms of knowledge and perspectives to generate new research questions and ideas. They will complete comparable tasks at the beginning and end of the course and reflect on changes in how they communicate research, ask questions, identify connections among different research areas, and generate ideas.

Session 1: Wednesday, October 7, Period 3
Orientation and Team Building
Students will review the course objectives, learning outcomes, and course procedures. Through collaborative activities, they will also help create an environment in which participants from different academic backgrounds can comfortably share their ideas and questions.

Session 2: Wednesday, October 14, Periods 3 and 4
Students will introduce their own research to people outside their field and develop interdisciplinary research ideas by identifying potential connections with research from other disciplines. They will experience interdisciplinary communication and idea generation and reflect on the difficulties and challenges they encounter through these activities.

Session 3: Wednesday, October 21, Periods 3 and 4
Preparing a Presentation Based on a Key Research Paper
Students will use a key paper that is important to their own research as a practice topic and identify its main points, appeal, and significance. Taking into account the knowledge and interests of an audience outside their field, they will prepare a presentation that communicates specialized content clearly and engagingly.

Session 4: Wednesday, October 28, Periods 3 and 4
Presenting a Key Research Paper and Developing Questioning Skills
Students will deliver their presentations and participate in question-and-answer sessions and peer feedback. They will learn how to ask questions that help them accurately understand research from other fields, deepen their understanding, and elicit new perspectives and possibilities. They will also apply what they learn from presenting a key paper to the communication of their own research.

Session 5: Wednesday, November 4, Periods 3 and 4
Comparing Different Approaches and Reconsidering One’s Own Expertise
Students will propose and share approaches to a common problem based on their respective areas of expertise. By comparing differences in how they frame the problem, what they focus on, which methods they use, and which values they prioritize, they will develop a deeper understanding of the characteristics of their own and others’ expertise and ways of thinking.

Session 6: Wednesday, November 11, Periods 3 and 4
Exercises in Generating Interdisciplinary Research Ideas
Students will extract and combine elements such as research subjects, perspectives, and methods from multiple research projects and identify new relationships among elements that are not usually connected. Through this process, they will generate a range of new research questions and interdisciplinary research ideas.

Session 7: Wednesday, November 18, Periods 3 and 4
Developing an Interdisciplinary Research Proposal
Students will collaborate with participants from different academic backgrounds to clarify the research background, research question, methods, contributions of each area of expertise, and significance of an interdisciplinary research idea. Through dialogue and peer feedback, they will develop the idea into a concrete research proposal.

Session 8: Wednesday, December 2, Periods 3 and 4
Revising Research Introductions and Interdisciplinary Research Ideas: Review and Evaluation
Students will revisit the research introduction and interdisciplinary research development tasks corresponding to those completed in Session 2. By comparing their initial and final work, they will examine changes in how they communicate research, ask questions about and understand research from other fields, identify connections among different areas of research, and generate new research questions and ideas.

担当教員からのメッセージ
Message from the Instructor

Addressing complex societal challenges requires the ability to engage in dialogue with people from different academic backgrounds and to generate new questions and ideas by drawing on diverse knowledge and perspectives. However, everyday research activities do not always provide sufficient opportunities to communicate continuously with researchers from other fields and reconsider one’s own research through such interactions.
In this course, students will communicate their own research and key research papers to people outside their field, ask questions about research from other disciplines, explore connections among different areas of research, and consider new research possibilities. Explaining specialized research to others and discussing open-ended issues can be challenging. At the same time, questions and unexpected perspectives from others may help students rediscover the appeal, originality, and potential of their own research.
Neither completed research results nor advanced English proficiency is required. Students are encouraged to ask questions openly, test their ideas without fear of making mistakes, and enjoy encountering different ways of thinking.
